I spend all Sunday with Penny as far away from the horses and the main house as possible. We drive into Ruby for a yummy waffle breakfast at Gilda’s Place, a local 50’s themed diner Beth recommended before driving into the bigger city of Clinton. We stop at the mall for souvenirs and, in Penny’s words, “real cowgirl clothes” before catching a movie. By the time we get back to the Iron H, it’s after dinner and the chance of running into Sawyer is close to zero.

All the feelings from yesterday’s kiss have spooked me into avoiding him for fear he’d tell me it was a mistake. I try to fall asleep after settling Penny into bed, but “danger-danger” starts echoing in my head as I picture myself with Sawyer. Clothes on, clothes off, doing couple stuff, spending time with Penny, meeting my family until exhaustion finally claims me.

Early Monday morning, we’re on the way out the door to the airport when Beth arrives to say goodbye to Penny. She hits me with news that momentarily makes me forget the sadness I feel at being apart from my daughter again. As much as I love my job, it is getting harder and harder leaving her so often.

“Congratulations, Emma. You’re the winning bidder for Sawyer.”

I’m in shock while Penny is hooting and hollering next to me. “What are you talking about, Beth? I didn’t enter the auction.” My accommodations are part of the software purchase and training package, so I didn’t have to use their current booking website for the cottage.

“I can’t believe you didn’t tell me you signed up, Emma. You get to spend the day with him tomorrow.”

My mind and body, still reeling from my boldness with Sawyer less than forty hours ago, and now I “win him” and all to the tune of four figures I can ill afford. I mean, what the ever-living heck is happening?

“How?” I stare at Beth, desperate to figure it out.

“I picked Sawyer for you, Mom.” My daughter’s voice rings out.

“I’m sorry, Penelope Jane Hart. What did you just say?” My words come out sharper than I’ve ever spoken to her before.

My daughter doesn’t have the good sense to look guilty. She’s entirely too smart for her own good, and without even asking how she could have managed it, considering how tech savvy she is, I have my suspicions.

“Nana helped me. Mom, Mr. Sawyer saved Kitty, and showed me how to ride Sassy. He’s nice. I like him, and I saw the funny way you two look at each other.” Penny made her case so matter-of-factly that I’m unable to form a proper comeback. How do you argue with a seven-year-old’s logic?

Besides, the one I should be upset with over this is my mother for going along with Penny’s well-meaning if misguided idea. But that will have to wait for later. Right now, I need to get her to the airport, then on the way back to the ranch, figure a way out of this mess.
